If we find ourselves with a desire that nothing in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that we were made for another world. — C.S. Lewis

My Story

Boy, where to start. So far it has been an interesting journey to say the least. If you haven't guessed it, I am the creator of this site. You can read more about that in the "About Us" section of the site.

I joined the Navy when I was around 19 and spent the next eight years in service to this great country. I was an electronics technician, working on radars and satellite communications spending my last few years as an instructor.

I left around 2006 and started working in Roseville as a technician. It was a very stressful time, trying to acclimate from a military lifestyle back to a civilian life. We had just found out that my wife was pregnant with our second child, we also learned I had cancer. What a bittersweet moment that was.

Cancer, what a horrible sounding word. It's hard to say and it's hard to think about. I had a very aggressive cancer, the doctors gave me a 50/50 chance.

Cancer turned out to be a real blessing, but what a rough road it was. I lost one of my kidneys, in addition to most of my lymph system. The Chemotherapy really did a number on me, I am still living with those side effects. All Glory to the Lord, he brought my family and I through it!

It's been almost four years now and I have been going to school and actually just graduated SOU with a Bachelors in Computer Science. What a blessing!!

So in my spare time I have been building websites. This was the first, www.easy-a.com was the second, and Im current working on a third.

So if people enjoy this site, Great! I will keep adding and updating it. As long as the site can produce a little money, I will keep it 100% Free. I have big plans for the site and cannot wait to implement them!

Eekers! I am just about out of room, I should probally fix that!

You can read more about how I built this site in the About Us section.

My Goals For This Year:

* Finish this rebuild!
* Make this site profitable!

Just found the site,thank you so much for offering for free.Being overweight is a major growing problem in america.Some people dont realize that overeating is an addiction just like drugs ,the diffrence is that you have to be around food everyday and you have to eat to surrive. The trick is learning how to eat to live not,NOT LIVE TO EAT.Your calorie counter will help many people become aware of what they eat in 1day verses what they should eat.

Hi Matthew.
I have tried before to get into a groove in the way of weight loss and dieting, but I have never been able to continue more than a few days. I have 60 days to lose as much as I can before a vacation that I'm taking. This will be the first vaca since I have reached this weight, about 35lbs more than I'm used to (my ideal). I found you site and have finished day 1. Hopefully I will be able to continue this time, with a goal date and a great system like yours. Thank you for making it free! The first stumbling block would be the cost of sites like yours, so I chose yours for this reason and also b/c you have a great calorie counter. Wish me luck and thank you again!

Just found this site and I'm happy to have done so. I am a little dense at times when it comes to computer stuff. You have made it pretty easy. Thank you! My husband is a computer whiz but all the more I hate to ask. . . "How do I????" so I lump along. Thanks for the work you have done to make it fun to use.
I am really desiring to get off another 20 pounds. I am down (over the course of a couple of years) about 30 pounds. I have been somewhat overweight my whole life. I just love to eat. I garden and cook everything we eat and love to do so. I am also ADDICTED(!) to almond butter. That stuff is my downfall....truly! How could a food bring a grown woman to her knees?? Seems ridiculous! Discipline, discipline, discipline. That's as much my goal as anything. Anyway, great site. Thanks and blessings to you all.

@ryman
Thanks! Actually "thecaloriecounter" uses the exact same USDA database that I have in this site, which can also be found here http://www.matthewscaloriecounter.com/public/food_search.aspx, and with allot more foods. TheCalorieCounter is also a barebones 'popcorn' site, there really is not much calorie counting going on, just a USDA food data dump.

Glad you like the site, good luck in your weight loss endeavors.

I just found your site and was excited about it right away. I just started working out last week and have started watching what I am eating. I found another site today http://thecaloriecounter.com/ which is helpful in finding out caloric intake for a wide variety of foods. It really helped my in "building foods" on your site. This is great, I can't wait to tell my wife about it!

I just found this site and I am hoping to lose weight I do not have a support system and life is rough but I need to lose weight so I can feel better. I have enjoyed today being able to put in foods that I eat and it keeps track. Every diet program out there cost money and I have none to give. This site being free is amazing.

@geriann

Welcome, glad you like the site!

As of right now, I don’t have many widgets developed. One day when I have time I may create more.

Currently there are only two widgets you could place on your blog,

The first is a Weight Loss Ticker:
http://www.matthewscaloriecounter.com/public/weight_loss_ticker.aspx

And the second is a Food Search Tool.
http://www.matthewscaloriecounter.com/free_weight_loss_tools/free_food_search_tool.aspx

Both of those can be integrated into a website or blog, for free!

This is an awesome site. I was wondering if there is a way that i can create a site like this for my wordpress.com site? Or do you have widgets that can be added to my site. My blog site is for me and my friends to gain support and lose weight and get our health back on track.

@starsmith

At this time there is no way to track water consumption (unless you add it as a food item), but it is something we have been thinking about.

Welcome!

I'm so happy to have found this site. No other site makes it this easy and fun to keep track of everything! I actually look forward to tracking calories, instead of dreading it. Thank you so much Matthew! You're an encouragement to me and I'm so thankful for the site you've created.

i just found this site today, i actually saw an interview on a talk show today where a girl had lost over 100 lbs in a year and she loved this site. i am looking forward to keeping up with what i eat and calories i burn. it makes a big difference when you are focused on what you consume. some think it shouldnt be a way of life to count calories. the way i see it, its not about being focused on counting calories, its being accountable for what i put into my body and how much. i want to eat to live not live to eat.
